How to Avoid Hot and Cold Spots in Your Colorado Home

How to Avoid Hot and Cold Spots in Your Colorado Home

A lot of homeowners in Northern Colorado have problems with hot and cold spots inside their home. In the summer, you may notice that one of the bedrooms is a bit on the warm side, despite the central AC going at full blast in the rest of the house.

During the winter, you may experience the exact opposite, where one of the kid’s rooms feels freezing, despite the fact that the rest of the home is warm and pleasant. Cold bedrooms aren’t ideal for playing, doing homework or sleeping.

If any of this sounds familiar, read on.

Hot and cold spots can be frustrating

If your home’s HVAC system doesn’t seem to be doing its job correctly, this can be a source of frustration for the entire family. Especially if the system was recently installed.

The key to solving this problem involves using a technique known as air balancing. Air balancing works regardless as to where in Colorado you reside. It can be used in Loveland, Denver and Fort Collins.

First things first

To start you’ll want to set your thermostat to an ideal temperature (and leave it at that setting for a few hours.)

After that, you’ll want to go into the parts of your home that seem problematic. You’ll want to check the damper blades on the vents in those areas. (The damper blades control how much air flows into a room. Adjusting the damper blades can have a dramatic effect.)

For example, if a room is very cold in the winter, you’ll want to open the damper blades a bit more. If, in in the winter, a room feels unusually warm, you’ll want to close them a bit. This same process can be reversed during the summer months.

If you live in a multi-story home, you’ll want to remember that heat rises. As such, damper blades on a second floor will likely need to be set differently than those on the first floor. You’ll also want to make sure that you don’t have any electronics that are running in close proximity to your thermostat. Electronic devices can give off heat, which in turn, can cause our thermostat to be inaccurate. This can also lead to hot and cold spots within your home.
